Considerations for your New Years movement related goals

Around this time each year people start thinking about their New Year’s resolutions. Of course one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is beginning, changing, or enhancing an exercise routine. This blog serves as an encouragement for qualitative goals rather than quantitative goals for those who look to begin, change, or enhance an exercise regimen. 

So what are qualitative and quantitative goals? Qualitative goals look at quality and things that are not numbers while quantitative primarily looks at numbers (weight, pounds, days per week, etc). We’re so accustomed to quantitative goals in America that it’s often hard for people to change that line of thought to qualitative measurements. 

Perhaps I can give you a few ideas?

Look inward and notice your: 

  • Energy levels

  • Quality of sleep

  • Mood

  • Mental clarity following exercise and throughout the day/days following

  • How you feel overall following exercise

I guess we could call this a shift from objective to subjective?  I am all for an intense workout, but what’s the point if your body feels like trash for several days following.

 

A few other tips to make your New Year’s resolution last beyond the first quarter of the year: 

  • Aim to find movement that feels good, and enjoy the movement you participate in each day. 

  • Gain friends or groups of friends to workout with and build relationships while moving – this makes it so much easier to show up. 

  • Remember that something is better than nothing and research shows that just 10 minutes per day is beneficial. 

 

As far as finding movement that feels good goes, there’s so many options to explore:

  • Pilates 


  • Running 

  • CrossFit

  • Walking 

  • Barre

  • Yoga 

  • HIIT

  • Strength training 

  • Dance 

 

Finding something you enjoy will enhance your fitness journey so much.
