Lighten Your Load

We have all heard the expression “lighten your load.”  This expression can be interpreted to mean anything that reduces what weighs you down.  From physical stuff to mental stresses, there are so many things that can weigh us down.

When I think of the things that  weigh on me, most if not all, are weights that’s I have put on myself.  The added accumulation of things in my house, specifically my closet, are all items I acquired and continue to hang on to.  The extra projects with my work are all tasks and goals that I set for myself.

Is it an addiction, a challenge, a desire to please, a collection, a diagnosis, or something else?  Some things are out of our control, but for those things that are optional for us, we should plan to lighten!

I am starting in my butler’s pantry with packaged foods such as canned vegetables, boxed mixes, etc.  My pantry suffers from deep shelves that are non-moveable.  This means that half of each shelf can’t be easily seen or accessed, which results in lots of lost items, many of which are out of date!

My pantry shelves, which are behind closed cabinet doors, will never be Insta-worthy, but they will be clean, contained, and clearly labeled.  As I write, I am almost finished with half the pantry.  Once finished, I will start on the other half.  I started with a day of measuring, planning, ordering, and checking dates.  Each night since, I work an hour or two  which allows me to complete 4 shelves.  These small increments of time make this project doable.  If I were to put off any more work to the next weekend, I would likely have lost motivation.

Even though I am not finished, I do see results!  Lightening my load also made me wonder if there are any areas I want to increase my load.  For me, I want to increase relaxation, joy, and purposeful activities.  The great thing is none of those must be cleaned, maintained, or weeded out!

I still have lots to accomplish to actually feel “lighter,” but we all have to start somewhere.
