James Ray Smith, who was known to his loved ones as “Pops”, was born on May 4, 1944 to Jim Sidney and Della Mae Smith. He was lovingly raised by Dewey and Della Mae Haney. He married Ann Smith on July 18, 1969. They had two sons, David Smith (Renee) and Steven Smith. His family was his greatest pride and joy. James had six grandchildren Calvin Brey (Megan), Carie Overstreet (Bubba), Amanda Walker, Andy Brey, Constance Smith, and Kadence Smith. He was blessed with four great-grandchildren Colby & Callie Walker and Cross & Maggie Brey.

He is survived by one brother, Dewey Haney; sisters, Dorothy Haney and Shirley McFarlin; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jim Sidney Smith; his mother, Della Mae Haney; his dad, Dewey Haney; sister-in-law, Donna Barnett; and Lanny Ferrell whom “Pops” loved like a son.

“Pops” was a lifelong cowboy, known for his gentle horse-breaking technique. He had an “ain’t no issue” mentality and overcame many obstacles through the years. He was a best friend to his boys and an adviser to all. He will be remembered by his family and friends as the best husband, daddy, father-in-law, and “Pops” in the world.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal; love leaves a memory no one can steal.

Arrangements are under the direction of Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
