The Gifted and Talented (GT) classes at Sulphur Springs Middle School have been engaging in truly inspiring acts of kindness for the community. Curious about their endeavors?

Throughout the academic year, these bright minds delved into the intricacies of the human brain. Exploring various cognitive hurdles that affect learning, they were motivated to devise innovative strategies for skill enhancement.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Education Foundation, the GT Program embarked on a meaningful community project. Led by Brooke Howard, the GT Coordinator and teacher at SSMS, students were tasked with meticulously researching and assembling task boxes tailored to the unique needs of students enrolled in the Special Education Program at Barbara Bush Primary School.

Working in groups, each equipped with a $50 budget from the Education Foundation, students focused on specific skills such as motor coordination, color recognition, and numerical literacy. Their mission? To design engaging activities that align with these skills, resulting in comprehensive task boxes.

Ms. Howard’s aim in this assignment was twofold: to cultivate higher-order thinking and creativity among her students while understanding other’s learning challenges. Additionally, she strived to provide teachers with a valuable resource for enriching their students’ educational experiences.

May 1st, they delivered the task boxes to Barbara Bush Primary School. The GT students demonstrated how to use them effectively in the classroom, offering support to both students and teachers alike.

Ms. Howard stated that she “could not be more proud of the dedication and innovation displayed by the GT students. Their endeavors exemplify how their higher level thinking skills can positively impact not only themselves but also the broader community.”

Witnessing such acts of kindness from the GT Program within the community is truly heartening, and anticipation brews for their next ventures.
