Lady Cats Open District Play With Road Game Against Paris

Lady Cats Open District Play With Road Game Against Paris
  • PublishedMarch 13, 2024

Spring is finally here, and the Texas High School Softball season is in full-swing. With 17 games already under their belt, the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats are ready to begin district play and get to defending their district title.

The first 17 games of the season have seen up’s and down’s for the Lady Cats, as they look to find their new identity. With a record of 8-7-2 in non-district play, the Lady Cats have played against strong competition and are now ready to take what they have learned and apply it to their district rivals.

In their eight wins this season, the Lady Cats are averaging over 13 runs per game, with their offense leading the way. In their seven losses, it’s been a very different story, plating just over 3.5 runs per game.

When the bats are rolling, the Lady Cats are one of the toughest teams in the state to beat and they should have even more bats available to them in district play, with a number of players returning from injury.

District play kicks off Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. on the road against Paris, a team they are very familiar with. Last season, Sulphur Springs went a perfect 10-0 in district play, including a series sweep against Paris in which they outscored them by a combined score of 32-2.

In their 10 district games last season, Sulphur Springs scored 129 runs, averaging just shy of 13 runs per game. Perhaps just as impressively, they only allowed 10 runs in that span, outscoring their opponent by an average score of 13-1.

The Lady Cats have a chance to be an even better offensive team this season and will look to prove that in the early going. In last season’s district opener against Paris it was Emerson Thompson and KK Montgomery who stole the show, going a combined 5-for-6 with three RBI, five runs scored and a pair of walks. As two of the returning leaders from last seasons squad, Thompson and Montgomery will hope to have similar outcomes in Wednesday’s matinee match.

Sulphur Springs will get the rest of the week off to rest, before returning to action Tuesday for their home opener in district. Tuesday they will play host to Pittsburg, a team they beat by scores of 21-4 and 10-0 a season ago.

Tuesday’s game against Pittsburg will be broadcast live on Chad’s Media and Front Porch News for anybody who can’t make it in person.
