Lady Eagles Improve to 7-1 in District Play

Lady Eagles Improve to 7-1 in District Play
  • PublishedOctober 18, 2023

The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles hosted Quinlan Boles Tuesday, in one of their final regular season games of the year. With the momentum of back-to-back wins behind them, the Lady Eagles were looking to put on a strong showing for their home fans.

It was an ace from Mhia Garcia who got things started early in the first set. Another ace from Paisley Watkins later in the set kept the momentum on Como-Pickton’s side, as things were tied up 9-9. From there the Lady Eagles completely dominated the remainder of the set, going on to outscore Boles 15-6 and taking the set by a score of 25-14.

Como-Pickton kept that momentum going in the second set, wasting no time creating separation between themselves and Boles. A huge block from Saylor Smith late in the set put the Lady Eagles ahead 18-8, in route to an even bigger 25-11 second-set win.

The third set went the exact same way, as it was a Sadie Wetzel block that extended their lead to 17-10. Boles would score just one more point in the remainder of the game, as the Lady Eagles were able to put it away in straight sets, once again winning 25-11.

Offensively Como-Pickton had a number of players who put on great performances. Addison Monk was the only player with double-digit kills, but Wetzel was right behind her with nine. Smith and Rhayne Thomas each had seven kills as well, as the Lady Eagles were able to spread the offense around.

Defensively it was Garcia and Maggie Brown who led the way, each finishing with 10 digs. Sanay Diaz was right behind them with eight digs and Watkins had seven digs of her own.

Garcia also tied with Watkins for a team-high four aces and posted an impressive 24 assists in the game.

The win marks the third consecutive for Como-PIckton, as they have won each of those in straight sets. This season they have won an impressive 73 sets while only losing 36.

Their record improves to 25-11 on the year and makes them 7-1 in district play. If they can get past Cumby on Friday, they will have an opportunity next Tuesday on Senior Night to split the district title with North Hopkins, if they’re able to pick up a win against them. In their first match it came down to the wire, with North Hopkins winning the fifth and final set by a score of 18-16.
