One charged with murder after fatal hit-and-run

A fatal incident occurred on Sunday, August 6, 2023, around 4:00 a.m. in the 700 block of Texas Street, prompting a police response.

Officers were dispatched to the scene in response to a report about an individual lying in the road and bleeding. The victim, identified as Giovanni Lopez, was found to have been run over by a vehicle. An initial investigation revealed that Lopez had sustained fatal injuries.

The suspect, Juan Hernandez-Ruiz, was identified by authorities as being involved in the incident. According to law enforcement, an earlier altercation between the victim and the suspect may have contributed to the tragic events. Hernandez-Ruiz was taken into custody and transported to the Hopkins County Sheriffs Office, where he is facing charges of Murder.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
