At approximately 3:55 a.m. on June 16, Hopkins County received a severe thunderstorm that damaged many homes and businesses.

Winds up to 70 mph ripped through the southern areas of the county, primarily including Como and Sulphur Springs. Ridgeway in the county’s south-central and Winnsboro to the south of Hopkins County also received damage.

Two major areas of damage include Como-Pickton Consolidated Independent School District (pictured) and Hopkins County Precinct 2 maintenance barn.

Citizens are advised not to attempt to drive to or through Como, as emergency responders and road crews attempt to clear the area.
The National Weather Service reported quarter-sized hail and damaging winds. NWS investigators are currently in the field cataloguing the area, and no determination of a tornadic event has yet been made.
