Feeling the Scars by Dr. Juan Harrison

They come back to you, sometimes at the oddest times in the strangest places.  You can be sitting right next to another person when a momentary heart pang or a spontaneous mental blip hits your radar as emotions can temporarily take you back on a short visit to the past.  Be it pleasant or painful, it occurred, it existed.  Maybe it was the loss of a child, spouse, or a grand.  Sometimes the pain is as real as yesterday.  Sometimes it becomes more muted with the passage of time.

Life wouldn’t be so tough if it weren’t for the pain and the subsequent scars from the hurt.  Some of you have had the unfortunate experience of having had one or more surgeries only to suffer complications from scar tissue creating issues with organs or subsequent surgeries.

From time to time we may indulge ourselves with a trip to our past.  It’s normal.  The challenge for some people is getting stuck, tripping on the scars, falling down.  For most of us mortals who have lost a significant person in our life, we all may have to fight a round or two with mild depression or a momentary gloom that quickly passes as we get back into the daily battle of seeking to stay positive for others and ourselves.

We all know people we just love to be around.  Others not so much.  You almost want to run when you see them coming.  Maybe it’s just the way a person looks at life, or maybe life has just got them off to a bad start and gone downhill from there.

People who live alone have a special challenge because they don’t have much feedback on their attitude.  Members of a family group can’t afford the luxury of a crabby attitude.  It can be contagious and affect the entire family’s mental health.  They can also find themselves the target of some major reactions designed to tamp down the sourpuss.

All of us have to make conscious choices to maintain a positive outlook.  For some, they just naturally see the dark side of everything.  Sadly they’re their own worst enemy.  Maybe they dwell on thoughts of past trauma and heartache.  Maybe they just think that they’re not supposed to experience or feel happiness and joy.  Life happens.  The choice of all of us is to let it defeat us or challenge us to rise above it and move on.  Bitterness benefits some.  Positivity blesses us all.  For believers we have a reason to smile as the Devil tries to steal our joy.  If we find we don’t have any joy to steal, we need to start looking.  It’s there.  A hug here and a smile there is a good start.  Like compound interest, the more we invest, the larger the dividends.  Nothing ventured is a sure loser.
