No. 6 Lady Lions extend winning streak to 10 games
  • PublishedDecember 21, 2022

Even though the whether is getting colder and colder, the Saltillo Lady Lions have been getting hotter and hotter. Entering the month of December, the Saltillo Lady Lions were already off to a strong start to the season, going 10-3 and earning a spot in TABC’s Top-25 of the state.

Since then, they have taking things up another level, looking like one of the best teams in the state. Entering Tuesday night’s game with a chance to extend their wining streak to double-digits, the Lady Lions were looking to do exactly that.

This was the third district game for Saltillo, as they opened district play with back-to-back wins. In those first two wins they beat Sulphur Bluff 65-28, before turning around and beating Campbell in an 84-19 blowout.

Saltillo was looking to do the same thing, though their offense needed some time to warm up in Tuesday’s road match. Despite not finding their offense in the opening frame, the Lady Lions made sure their opponents didn’t either, allowing Avery to score just three points.

In the second quarter Saltillo was able to find the gear they were looking for, having a terrific 22-point frame. While scoring a game-high 22 points, they also allowed just two points, extending their lead to 30-5 at the end of the first half.

With yet another blowout win in hand, the Lady Lions continued to play hard in the second half, outscoring Avery 14-5 in the third quarter. In the final frame they were finally able to slow down, cruising to a 49-14 win.

Julianna Giles was the leading scorer for the Lady Lions, matching Avery in total points with 14. Gabby Ross and Maysen Pipkin also finished in double-digits as well, scoring 11 points and 10 points respectively.

Other scorers for Saltillo including Allie Lane with seven points, Lani Dean with five points and Ryleigh Redar with two points.

It wasn’t just the varsity squad who enjoyed a blowout win for Saltillo, as the Lady Lions junior varsity team joined in on the fun as well. The Lady Lions junior varsity team didn’t allow a single point through the first three quarters, managing to score 46 points along the way.

They added another 14 points to their total in the fourth quarter while finally allowing four points, winning the game by a final score of 60-4. Kallie Potter led the way in this one, scoring an impressive 18 points.

Jaylee Miller was right behind her with 16 points, while Lani Dean had 11 points. Jamie Alvarez added eight points to the total, while Jasmine Alonso scored four points and Amoberly White had three points.

The win for the varsity team extended Saltillo’s winning streak to 10, and marks their 20th win of the season. They have climbed as high as No. 6 in the TABC poll, and for good reason.

During their 10-game winning streak, they haven’t been in danger once, winning all but one of those games by 20 points or more. On average, they have put up an impressive 55.4 points per game. Perhaps just as impressive, during that same stint they have allowed their opponents to score just 24 points per game.

Winning 10 games in a row is an amazing feat in high school basketball, but doing so by an average score of 55-24 is even more impressive. The Lady Lions will get a quick break from district play when they compete in the Boles Tournament next week.

They will look to keep their winning streak going and continue to add to what is already a very impressive resume.
