Hornets finish 2nd place in District 23-A

The Miller Grove Hornets hosted Dodd City Tuesday, with a district championship on the line. Both teams entered the game with district records of 12-1, with the winner walking away as the winner of District 23-A.
Miller Grove opened the game with a strong first quarter, led in large part by Lexton Sly. Sly scored the final seven points of the frame for Miller Grove, helping them get out to a 14-12 lead.
The two teams played a very close second as well, with things staying neck-and-neck for the rest of the half. Dodd City ended the half on a 5-0 run, including a layup at the buzzer, giving them a 25-24 lead as the two teams went into the locker room.
Dodd City opened the second half with a very strong third quarter in which they began to create separation from Miller Grove. Jacob George ended the frame with a pair of layups, keeping the score within single-digits at 39-31.

Miller Grove fought hard in the final frame, though they were never able to get themselves back into the game. Dodd City added another 18 points to their total, winning the game by a final score of 57-43.
Sly and Landon Burnett were the leading scorers for Miller Grove, finishing with 13 points each. Sly had a team-high four assists, while Burnett had a team-high five rebounds.
The next leading scorer was Tanner Hensley who had eight points and two rebounds. George added five points, while Ryker Haivala and Jagger Qualls each had three points.
The loss makes Miller Grove 24-10 on the year and 12-2 in district play, making them the two seed in District 23-A. They will face Sulphur Bluff in the opening round of the playoffs, Monday at Sulphur Springs. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
