The Sulphur Springs Wildcats hosted Pine Tree Friday, looking to pick up their third consecutive victory. With a district record of 5-2, Sulphur Springs was looking to pick up a win and keep themselves firmly in the race for the district title.

The Wildcats got off to a very strong start, dominating the game from the very beginning. Sulphur Springs scored the first 10 points of the game, and went on to build their lead to as much as 18-2 in the opening frame. The Wildcats offense did slow down a bit in the closing minutes of the quarter, though they were able to hold on to a 22-9 lead entering the second frame.

Caleb Alexander got things started for the Wildcats in the second quarter, picking off a pass on the opening possession. Alexander gave the ball to Justin Haire, who gave it right back to Alexander. Alexander knocked down a very deep 3-pointer to give his team the momentum right back.

Neither team lacked offense in the second quarter, though neither team was able to gain much of an advantage over the other. With both teams matching each other along the way, Sulphur Springs went into the locker room with a 37-23 lead.

The Wildcats came out of the locker room and had their best frame of the night, completely pulling away from Pine Tree in the third quarter. After leading by 14 points at the end of the first half, Sulphur Springs was able to extend their lead to 62-36 at the end of the third quarter.

Despite holding on to a huge lead entering the final frame, the Wildcats never took their foot off the gas. Sulphur Springs continued to score well in the final quarter, walking away with the 82-47 win.

Justin Haire was once again the leading man for the Wildcats, as he picked up yet another double-double. Haire led the team with 15 points and 13 rebounds, as the big man shot 7-12 from the field.

Kordrick Turner and Caleb Alexander were right behind him, scoring 14 points each. Turner shot an efficient 6-9 from the field, while Alexander shot an impressive 4-5 from behind the 3-point line.

The double-digit scorers didn’t stop there, however, as Branson Lynn and Parker Whisenhunt each had 12 points as well. Whisenhunt also had seven rebounds to his name, while Lynn was able to dish out a pair of assists.

Cason Arrington and Cole Theofiledes each had five points, as the two shot a combined 4-6 from the field. Malachi Myles added four points of his own, while Jaquan Jones had one point.

The win pushes Sulphur Springs’ record to 22-9 on the year and makes them 6-2 in district play. Their 6-2 district record puts them in second place, trailing Hallsville by one game.

The Wildcats will have Tuesday off, before traveling to Hallsville Friday, where they will look to even things up with the Bobcats. Friday’s road match against Hallsville is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Coverage of the game will be provided on Front Porch News.
