The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats put up a great defense against the Longview Lobos Friday night but fell to a 2-0 loss in the second half. The first half of the game saw a scoreless game entering half time. The defensive line, Kylie Clarke and Emily Soto, kept the Lady Cats in the game Friday night. Clarke and Soto did an amazing job of shutting down the offense from the center, and assisting the outside players, Kamilah Martinez, Vanessa Wayne and Annaston Price, to help block Longview and to keep the game scoreless. Clarke and Soto controlled the back line through movement, passing and a great standup defense which helped to position the ball up the field to help gain the advantage. Shots were made in the first half by both teams, but no balls connected to the back of the net. The Longview defense helped to keep their team in the game as well.

The second half started with an early goal by Longview, making the score 1-0. The ball snuck underneath of keeper Zoe Haywood’s diving hand. Only inches were between her and the ball.  All the right moves were made by the players, but sometimes one just gets by.

The game continued with both sides looking to move the ball to the opposite end zone for a scoring goal. The majority of the play stayed in the middle of the field with each team trying to gain advantage to move towards the goal.  Longview stayed on top of our goal scoring players with at least two defenders per offensive player.  That two to one ratio is always hard to shut down and move past.

It wasn’t until late in the half when a Longview player managed to find a break and get around a defender resulting in another Lobo goal.

“Our district home opener against Longview was an amazing game. Longview is a very tough opponent, but our girls went out there and played their hearts out!! Defensively we were able to contain them and go into the half 0-0. Second half was still a great half for us, unfortunately Longview was able to capitalize on the only two major mistakes we had all night. I am very proud of all the girls and their hard work” stated Coach Aguayo.

The Lady Cats fought hard to keep the score low and challenge the Lobos on the field. The strong defense and middle support helped the Lady Cats succeed in holding Longview throughout the game.  Overall, this result is nothing to complain about for the Lady Cat, Longview was the previous seasons District winners and they closed out their season last year undefeated.  The Lady Cats will meet up against Longview later in the season at Longview.

The next game for the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats will be Tuesday night against Mount Pleasant at the Prim.  Be sure to come out and cheer on the girls.
