Obituary for Jimmy Johnson
  • PublishedApril 23, 2024

A funeral service for Jimmy Johnson, age 70, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at MLK Church of Christ, with Bro. Danard Barnes officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

On August 28, 1953, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, God blessed Elnora Johnson and Wille B. Wooten with a bouncing baby boy who they named Jimmy Wayne. At an early age, Jimmy dedicated his life to Christ and was baptized. He attended school in Sulphur Springs, Greenville, and the Historic I.M. Terrell High School when the family relocated to Fort Worth, Texas in 1966. He loved football and due to his playing abilities acquired the nickname “Jim Brown” however his family affectionately called him “Bubba” from the very beginning.

Jimmy was employed at R.L. Swiney Lumber Co. and years later self-employed as a landscaper. While in high school, Jimmy met a beautiful young woman named Regina Brookins and to this union, the apple of his eye, Trevenne “Keith” was born. Jimmy would later go on to marry Vickie Jackson, who preceded him in death.

Jimmy was an active member of the Church of Christ for many years. One of his greatest joys was being the van driver for the church. He would wash and polish that van daily! Jimmy loved his church and the church members and most of all he loved the Lord. He was dedicated and active in attendance until his health began to fail.

On Friday, April 12, 2024, the Lord put His arms around our dear Jimmy and whispered, “Come with me.” Although we loved you dearly we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, your beautiful smile is at rest. Although we are going to miss our “Bubba”, we are at peace because we know that he is now at eternal rest with the Lord. He is preceded in death by his wife, Vickie Johnson; mother and step-father, Elnora and Aubrey Cotton; father and step-mother, Willie B. and Hazel Wooten; sisters, LaWanda White and Chandra Manning.

He leaves to cherish his memories; son, Trevenne “Keith” Brookins (Shondra) Dallas, Texas; sister, Paula Taylor (Preston) Fort Worth, Texas; granddaughters, Qualesha Thomas (Nate) San Antonio and Ja’Keilyn Brookins Arlington, Texas; great-grandchildren Loriana, Louis, Lenny and Luka; step-sisters, Elnora Gibson (Bernett) Montgomery, Texas, Texeene Evans (Tommie) Willis, Texas, and Edda Wickware Tyler; nieces, Felicia “Shawne” and Patience; and nephew, Chaddrick all of Fort Worth, Texas; a host of cousins and friends; his Rock Creek Family, and MLK Church of Christ Family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
