Spring has sprung! In Northeast Texas, the arrival of Spring brings with it an abundance of environmental allergens. Trees are budding, flowers are blooming and along with these beautiful changes many people experience symptoms of environmental allergies. Allergies can be due to molds, trees, grasses, dust, along with many other small particles in the environment. DFW and its surrounding areas consistently rank in the top 10 locations of highest allergens in the country. Our mild winters and warm climate are perfect for keeping molds, spores, and other allergens alive and thriving.
When exposed to environmental allergens, your immune system recognizes these particles as a threat and responds by releasing chemicals that result in the common symptoms associated with allergies.
Symptoms of environmental allergies can be mild to severe and include runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, headache, scratchy throat and itchy watery eyes. Those with chronic respiratory illnesses often experience an increase in respiratory symptoms when allergens are high.
There are some steps you can take to lessen your exposure to allergens. It is recommended to limit time outdoors when allergens are high. In your home, wash all linens frequently, change out your air filters, frequently vacuum floors. If you have been outdoors mowing or gardening, remove your clothing and wash it upon coming inside and shower to remove allergens. If you are especially prone to environmental allergies, you may want to consider an air purifier in your home.
If you know you frequently suffer from allergies, there are several types of over the counter medications that you can take preventatively. Oral antihistamines such as Allegra, Claritin and Zyrtec along with antihistamine nasal sprays such as Flonase are considered safe and effective at helping to prevent allergies. Cromolyn nasal spray, a mast cell stabilizer can block your immune response to allergens.
