Sulphur Springs Lady Cats, Wildcats Soccer Each Take Home District Title
The last few years have been historic for the Sulphur Springs boys and girls soccer programs, each continuing to reach new heights each season. This year, the two have reached an even new height, with both the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats and Wildcats teams each taking home district titles.
For the Lady Cats, this season was about defending their district title from last season, when they went a perfect 8-0 in district play and made it all the way to the Regional Quarterfinal round of the playoffs, a round they had never made before. They were able to do exactly that, once again going a perfect 8-0 and capping off an undefeated district title.
The Lady Cats were not only able to go undefeated in district play, but did so in as dominant fashion as possible. In their eight district games they scored 38 goals, averaging almost five goals per game. Perhaps even more impressively, they only allowed three goals the entire way, including six shutout wins.
Now the team is ready to make another postseason run, looking to go to even greater heights than they’ve reached in the past. They will kickoff their playoff journey Tuesday, March 26 when they go up against Tyler Chapel Hill, the same team they beat 9-0 in the opening round of last year’s postseason.
The Bi-District match will be played in Lindale at 6:30 p.m.
For the Sulphur Springs Wildcats, their mission was a similar one. Continue to reach new heights, and take home a district title.
In the 2022-203 season the Wildcats finished as Co-District Champions, though they would go into the postseason as the No. 2 seed due to tiebreakers. While they had a great season and even won their first round playoff match, this year team was looking to take the district title for themselves this year.
They got off to a great start in doing so, winning their first four district games and doing so by a combined score of 22-4. While they would go on to fall in penalty kicks to Pittsburg and Pleasant Grove, they would pick up wins in each of their other district battles, picking up 31 points and taking the district title for themselves.
It was in the final game of the season against North Lamar in which they were able to officially clinch the division title. “Massive win over North Lamar, your 2024 district champs,” Head Coach Alexi Upton said. “I’m very proud of our boys and their accomplishments.”
While playoff information has yet to be provided for the boys, they will also be kicking off their postseason run next week. Updates will be provided as we receive more information.
Winning has become tradition for both the Sulphur Springs Wildcats and Lady Cats soccer programs. Now, both as district champions, they are both poised to continue their traditions of reaching new heights.
