Lady Eagles Open District Play With 16-1 Blowout Win

Lady Eagles Open District Play With 16-1 Blowout Win
  • PublishedMarch 14, 2024

It’s been a great start to the season for the Como-Pickton Lady Eagles, who entered this week ranked No. 6 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association State Softball Poll. The Lady Eagles won 19 of their first 21 games, including a nine-game winning streak to finish non-district play, and this week they began the district portion of their schedule, hosting Detroit Wednesday.

Como-Pickton wasted no time setting the tone, plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning, after a scoreless top of the frame. All five of their runs came with two outs in the inning, starting with an RBI double from Addison Monk.

Saylor Smith followed right behind Monk with a two-run homer, extending the lead to 3-0. The Lady Eagles would go on to score two more runs in the inning, thanks to a single from Sarah Corley and Journey Brumley reaching on an error.

Detroit would answer back in the second inning with their lone run of the game, but pitcher Lexie Rainey got out of the inning without allowing any more damage. After a scoreless second inning, Rainey got her run back by doubling to score Monk to get the lead back to five.

It was in the fourth inning when Como-Pickton was able to put the game away, putting together a huge 10-run inning. The frame saw doubles from Bella Romero and Monk, and also saw Rainey hit a two-run bomb. The final run of the game came on a sacrifice fly from Gracie Thompson, scoring Paisley Watkins and completing the 15-run rule.

Monk led the way offensively, going 3-for-3 with three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. Romero, Smith and Rainey each had multi-hit games, going a combined 6-for-9 with six RBI and seven runs scored, as well as double, triple and home run.

The win pushes the Lady Eagles record to an impressive 20-2, helping them reach the 20-win mark just 22 games into the season. Now with a 1-0 record in district play, the Lady Eagles will turn their focus to Tuesday’s road match against Alba-Golden.

Last season Como-Pickton swept Alba-Golden in the season series, beating them by final scores of 6-1 and 10-0 in route to an undefeated district schedule. They will be looking for the same outcome this season and will look to defend their district title for a fourth consecutive year.
