Chaney, Driver, Robinson and Wall Celebrate Signing Day

Chaney, Driver, Robinson and Wall Celebrate Signing Day
  • PublishedFebruary 8, 2024

Wednesday was National Signing Day and a number of Sulphur Springs Wildcats made their announcements on where they will be playing at the next level. Each of them brought great contributions to the Wildcats athletic program and will be looking to continue to excel at the next level.

Austin Chaney, Texas A&M Commerce

Chaney was a First Team All-District cornerback for the Sulphur Springs Wildcats and was the anchor of a secondary that proved to be one of the teams biggest strengths this season. While playing lockdown coverage, teams very rarely looked Chaney’s way, but when they did he made them pay for it.

The senior corner came up with one of the biggest plays of the season, picking off Paris right in front of their end zone to seal a big district win. He also averaged over seven tackles per game, proving to be effective in each level on defense.

“I’ve really prayed a lot about just getting to stay close to home and I’ve always been a fan of A&M Commerce,” Chaney said on signing day. “Just the coaching staff and the facilities and the environment really and the culture there just felt like home.”

Brady Driver, Lamar University

Brady Driver has been the starting quarterback at Sulphur Springs for over two seasons, and in his time he racked up a number of achievements. This season Driver was named District MVP, racking up 44 touchdowns while throwing for just seven interceptions. He also passed for over 2,000 yards and finished just shy of the 1,000-yard rushing mark as well. After a long playoff drought, Driver and company helped lead the Wildcats to back-to-back postseason appearances.

“It’s really surreal,” Driver said of his big moment on signing day. “This is something that I’ve always wanted and to finally achieve that is really awesome.”

Garret Robinson, FC Odisea

Robinson was the only non-football player on signing day this year and will be making the move to FC Odisea in Spain. Robinson has been a huge contributor for the Sulphur Springs Wildcats soccer program, a team who is currently 2-0 in district play with a goal differential of 15-1. The Wildcats have continuously improved and made deep playoff runs, and Robinson and his teammates will look to do the same this season.

“The brotherhood and the friends and everyone there, just the bonds we have,” Robinson said when asked what he would miss most about being a Sulphur Springs Wildcat.

Braxton Wall, Missouri S&T

Rounding up this year’s signing day was linebacker Braxton Wall, who will be taking his talents to Missouri S&T. Wall was Second Team All-District this year and was the lone senior linebacker on a defense that played very well all season. His senior leadership helped propel a Wildcats team that allowed 20 or less points in a game five different times this season.

“It feels good, I’ve been working all my life to accomplish my dream, it feels good to achieve it,” Wall said. When asked what he would miss most about being a Sulphur Springs Wildcat Wall said “You’ll never have the feeling of putting on the jersey and walking out in front of your hometown again. The whole town is watching your back and you’ll never have that feeling again.”

Each member of this years Signing Day class has achieved great things and represented Sulphur Springs very well. They will look to continue to improve their games, and continue to represent Sulphur Springs at the next level.
