Wildcats Look To Remain Unbeaten In District Play

Wildcats Look To Remain Unbeaten In District Play
  • PublishedJanuary 23, 2024

The month of January has been very kind to the Sulphur Springs Wildcats, as they have opened up district play on fire, winning each of their first three games. Tonight, after one trip on the road, the Wildcats are back at home for both games this week and will be looking to remain undefeated in district play.

District play began back on Jan. 12 for the Wildcats, when they played host to Paris. Sulphur Springs played great all game, extending their lead late in the first half and holding on to a firm lead for the remainder of the game, walking away with the 51-39 win.

Due to weather, they were forced to play back-to-back days last week, hosting Liberty-Eylau Thursday and traveling to North Lamar Friday. The odd scheduling and being forced to play back-to-back days didn’t bother the Wildcats at all, as they picked up another pair of convincing wins.

In Thursday’s contest against Liberty-Eylau, it was their trio of big men who really set the tone. The trio of Logan Jackson, Cadyn Spigner and Lane Hunt combined for 21 points and 24 rebounds, helping lead them to a 45-30 win.

Friday they would get their first road test in district play, traveling to North Lamar. The travel didn’t slow Sulphur Springs up at all, once again winning by double-digits, this time by a final score of 50-39.

With just two games left before the halfway point of district play, the Wildcats remain undefeated in district play and will get another pair of chances to play in front of their home crowd this week, starting Tuesday against Pleasant Grove. Pleasant Grove is 2-1 in their first three district games, beating North Lamar and Pittsburg, but falling to Paris 69-53. The Hawks are averaging 53 points per game in district and will likely need that many to get past Sulphur Springs.

For Friday’s match, the Wildcats will play host to Pittsburg, a team who has yet to pick up a win in district so far. In their first three games they have yet to come close, losing to Liberty-Eylau (54-44), North Lamar (47-27) and Pleasant Grove (58-35).

While there is still plenty of basketball left to be played, the Sulphur Springs Wildcats are setting themselves up for great seeding and even another potential district championship. Both games this week are not only at home, but will be broadcast live on Front Porch News and Chad’s Media.
