Senior Rafe Penson Breaks Sulphur Springs Single Game 3-Point Record
Senior guard Rafe Penson etched his name into the Sulphur Springs record books last week, when he broke the single-game 3-point record in a tournament win. With the team looking to snap a four-game losing streak and pick up some momentum going into district play, Penson was able to help provide exactly that, knocking down 11 3-pointers in a single game.
Over Christmas break, the Wildcats senior guard put his name in the Sulphur Springs history books forever, breaking a record that was previously held by Wildcat alum Grayson McClure. Penson did so in the Allen Tournament, a school McClure coincidentally coaches at now.
“Words can’t express how proud I am of Rafe,” McClure said. “I’ve watched him grow as a player since he was in fourth grade and it’s awesome to see.”
“When I got the call that he was on pace to break my record I couldn’t have been more excited to hear, since he’s such a hard worker and selfless player,” McClure added. “Rafe should be beyond proud of himself for cementing his name beside the countless great players to go through the Wildcats program.”
The Wildcats went on to have a strong finish during their final tournament of the season, picking up back-to-back wins against Central Heights and Godley. In the back-to-back wins Sulphur Springs outscored their opponents by a combined score of 132-89 and winning each game by 19 points or more.
Penson and the Wildcats will get one final game to continue to build momentum before district play, as they travel to Bullard Friday. After that, they will be given one more week of rest before hosting Paris Friday, Jan. 12 in their district opener.
They will also get the luxury of starting district play with back-to-back home games, as they will host Liberty-Eylau in their following game, Tuesday, Jan 16. If you can’t go support the Wildcats in person, each of their first two district games will be broadcast live on Front Porch News and Chad’s Media.
