Lady Eagles Pick Up Road Victory In 2OT Thriller

Lady Eagles Pick Up Road Victory In 2OT Thriller
  • PublishedDecember 26, 2023

The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles were on the road last Tuesday, as they traveled to Harts Bluff in search of second consecutive road victory. Coming off a momentous win in Cumby the week before, the Lady Eagles were looking to keep their scoring up and adding another notch in the win column.

The game got off to a bit of a slow start, with neither team able to find much offense. The Lady Eagles were only able to record four points in the opening frame, but they held Harts Bluff to eight points, keeping themselves well within reach.

Como-Pickton picked things up in the second quarter, scoring twice as many points as they did in the first frame, while still playing lock down defense. The uptick in scoring helped them cut the deficit to just one point as they entered the locker room for halftime.

The offense slowed down once again to open the second half, but the Lady Eagles didn’t let that discourage them. They continued to play strong on the defensive end, before having a huge explosion in the fourth quarter, posting a game-high 14 points in the frame and forcing overtime.

Things stayed neck-and-neck in overtime, with neither team able to gain an advantage over the other. The two teams stayed even, needing a second overtime period to decide a winner.

In the second overtime the Lady Eagles were finally able to prevail, outscoring Harts Bluff 9-4 to secure their 47-42 victory.

Addi Monk led the way for the Lady Eagles, posting a team-high 17 points on 7-19 shooting from the field. Monk also had an incredible 19 rebounds, to go along with six blocks and four steals.

The second-leading scorer for Como-Pickton was Cali Morris, who finished just shy of the double-digit mark. Morris had nine points, shooting an almost perfect 5-6 from the free throw line. Morris also had a team-high four steals, to go along with five boards and three dimes.

The Lady Eagles also had three players finished with a +/- of +10 or better. Kati Calvillo led the team, posting a +16 in 30 minutes of action. Bella Romero and Maggie Brown were close behind her, finishing with a +13 and +11 respectively.

“Your Lady Eagles played poised in a very intense game that ended up going into double overtime,” Coach Joe Garcia said. “They scored some key points to tie the game in regulation to eventually scoring key free throws to secure the win.”

“This is a great way to go into the break,” Garcia added. “Way to go Lady Eagles! We are very proud of you!”

The win was the 10th of the year for Como-Pickton, improving their record to 10-7 and improving to three games over .500. The Lady Eagles are playing some of their best basketball as they head into the final stretch of the year.

Since their three-game losing streak in mid November the Lady Eagles have been on a roll, going 9-2 and outscoring their opponents 479-416. Como-Pickton was predicted to finish second place in District 15-2A before the season and will be looking to live up to those expectations with the way they have been playing.

Como-Pickton is back in action this week when they will play in the Boles Holiday Tournament.
