Summer is a time of sun-soaked adventures on the water, and boating is one of the most popular recreational activities in Texas. However, amidst the excitement, it’s crucial to prioritize safety to ensure an accident-free experience.

  1. Always Wear a Life Jacket: The golden rule of boating safety is to wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) or life jacket at all times while on board.
  2. Avoid Alcohol: Boating and alcohol do not mix. Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol is as dangerous as driving a car after drinking. The risk of fatalities in boating accidents doubles when alcohol is involved.
  3. Enroll in a Boater Education Course: Texas requires a license to operate a boat. Knowing how to navigate waterways, recognize hazards, and understand boating etiquette can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents.
  4. Operate at a Safe Speed: Excessive speed on the water can lead to accidents and collisions, especially in crowded areas. Follow all posted signs in order to operate at a safe speed that allows you to react to any potential hazards.
  5. Children’s Safety: Children younger than 13 years old must wear a PFD while underway. Ensure their safety by providing them with appropriately sized life jackets and keeping a close watch on them at all times.
  6. Avoid Overloading: Avoid the temptation to overload your boat with passengers beyond its recommended capacity. Overloading can lead to stability issues and make the vessel more prone to accidents, especially in rough waters.
  7. Have a Lookout: Always have a passenger serve as a lookout in addition to the boat operator. Having an extra set of eyes to watch for potential hazards can be invaluable in preventing accidents.
  8. Watch for Hazards: Be cautious of low water areas or submerged objects that could damage your boat or cause accidents. Familiarize yourself with the waterway you’ll be navigating to avoid any unexpected surprises.

By following these boating safety tips, you can ensure a delightful and secure experience on the beautiful Texas lakes and rivers. Prioritizing safety not only protects you and your passengers but also contributes to an overall safer boating environment for everyone enjoying the waterways.
