2023 Juneteenth Celebration Coming Up Soon

2023 Juneteenth Celebration Coming Up Soon
  • PublishedJune 12, 2023

If you aren’t aware of what the holiday Juneteenth is, here is what you need to know!

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates June 19, 1865, the abolition of slavery in Texas. This holiday wasn’t always celebrated in Sulphur Springs. In 2009, a new era of Juneteenth started in Sulphur Springs, according to Juneteenth committee president Prince Beachum. After the success with the first parade in 2012, it has vastly grown in our community since. Visitors to the parade and grill out afterwards have come not only from all over Texas, but from Oklahoma, Louisiana, and even as far away as California. On September 23, 2022,  the Hopkins County commissioners court voted unanimously to make Juneteenth a county holiday! Our community has come together and celebrated this day since.

This year, Kaleigh Payne was the recipient of Miss Juneteenth 2023!

The Juneteenth Parade will be on June 17th at 11:00am taking place at Pacific Park where we will be honoring freedom from slavery as well as all the ladies who participated in this year’s pageant. There will be MANY events taking place on the June 17 and 18 to celebrate Juneteenth at Pacific Park. ❤️

For example:

  • Juneteenth Marathon Run at 7:00am
  • Juneteenth Parade at 11:00am
  • Juneteenth Picnic at 1:00pm
  • Music, Games, and Fun! (Bring a lawn chair) at 6:00pm
