The Sulphur Springs Middle School 8th grade robotics team took on the VEX World Competition last week in Dallas, Texas. Middle School, High School and Collegiate students from all over the world come to compete against each other to determine who could amass the most points and go home WorldChampions. The Sulphur Springs Middle School students had alliances with teams from every part of the world during the competition. Hundreds of students and countries were represented in the event that took place over the course of three days. The Creeper Beaters who consisted of Cooper Thesing, Sawyer Shutt, Gavin Solarzano and Zachary Young. As well as the Bot Beaters who consisted of Pierce Dollison, Aliyas Whorton, Bradley Meek and Tyler Scott, brought their robots to compete.

While the teams did not have the results they were looking for in the end, enjoyed the experience of attending Worlds and hope to be able to compete in the VEX competition again at the HighSchool level. With the growth and demand from the Middle School robotics program, the High School will have well-prepared robotics students who are ready to continue their learning into their high school years. The strength of the MiddleSchool program is going to help with the continual improvement of the High School program.

With over 500 teams in the Middle School level who came from all over the world as far a New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Kazakhstan and SouthKorea to compete. The attendance of this event drove home the need and desire for more STEM programs in our community and schools.

The world is quickly becoming more automated, and these students need to know how to make that automation work for them for the future. These students are learning skills for the future now. They are learning to work in a group with technical driven skills.

Adapting to different personalities and ideas while making the deadlines, and seeing tangible results based on what you completed. All skill sets they might use in part of the career field. The effort the students are learning today in Middle School will bring future higher technology jobs in our local economy and community.Thank you to Mrs. Shutt and Mr. Cole for traveling with eight teenage boys for multiple days an adventure they will most likely never forget.
