Sulphur Springs Wildcats, Lady Cats Each Take District

Sulphur Springs Wildcats, Lady Cats Each Take District

After a hard fought season the Sulphur Springs Wildcats and Lady Cats golf teams put their talents to the test this week, as they competed in the district tournament. The first day of the tournament was Thursday, March 30, with the final round taking place Monday.

Both the Lady Cats and Wildcats went into the district tournament with confidence, but didn’t let themselves get distracted. Strong opening day’s saw both teams with a lead midway through the tournament, just needed a strong second day to finish the job.

What both the Lady Cats and Wildcats was a lot more than that. Both teams went on to win the district tournament by huge margins, putting on excellent performances and running even further away from the competition.

For the Lady Cats it was sophomore Alyson Thomas who took first place. Freshman Evey Birdsong was right behind her with a second place finish. Sophomore McKenna Meskimen took third place, while MyKyllie Meador took fourth place and sophomore Kenzie Posey finished in fifth place.

For the boys, it was freshman Gage Gideon who took first place in the district tournament. Gideon had to go into a playoff for first place and won the first playoff hole with a birdie to take the individual title. Caleb Kresting and Nick Burney also had top-five finishes, taking third place and fifth place respectively.

Other strong finishes were Tatum Tran in eighth place, Noah Newsom in ninth place and Luke White in 12th place. “I could not be more proud of this team to qualify for Regionals as District champs,” boys coach Jeremy DeLorge said. “The future is BRIGHT for the guys and this program!”

Both the Lady Cats and Wildcats advance to Regionals at Van Zandt Country Club. The girls tournament will take place April 17 and 18, while the boys will follow on April 19 and 20.
