Como-Pickton Lady Eagles Advance to Regional Quarterfinal

Como-Pickton Lady Eagles Advance to Regional Quarterfinal
  • PublishedMay 6, 2024

The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles continue to add to an impressive legacy, as they once again find themselves in the Regional Quarterfinal round of the playoffs. Already reaching the 30-win mark for the season, the Lady Eagles look to continue their winning ways, after beating Frankston two games to one in a best-of-three series.

Como-Pickton took game one of the series, but did so after finding themselves down 2-0. The Lady Eagles immediately answered back, tying things up with a pair of runs, before going on to add four runs in the top of the sixth to take a lead.

Now playing in the drivers seat, they were able to hold Frankston off, winning 7-4 and taking the first game of the series. Addison Monk and Lexie Rainey led the way offensively, going a combined 5-for-8 and driving in three runs. Monk also had a home run and a double in the game.

The duo were also responsible for the pitching, as Rainey would go 6.2 innings in which she allowed just three earned runs on seven hits and six walks, with six strikeouts of her own. Monk would come in to get the final out, securing the victory and giving the Lady Eagles the upper-hand in the series.

In Game two, it was once again Frankston who would strike first, driving in three runs in the opening frame. The Lady Eagles chipped their way back into, scoring two runs in the second and another pair of runs in the fourth to take the lead, but it wouldn’t last for long.

Frankston answered back immediately, scoring seven runs over the final three frames to secure a 10-5 victory and force a third and final game in the series.

Finally, with both teams already taking one game in the series, it all came down to Game Three, where the Lady Eagles dominated from the very beginning. Como-Pickton was able to score in each inning, including scoring eight runs over the first two innings alone.

They would go on to win 11-0, without allowing a single hit, and needing just four and a half innings to get the job done. It was once again Rainey on the mound, who went the full five innings without allowing a single hit or walk, with just one error standing in here way of a perfect game.

Offensively, the Lady Eagles saw multi-hit games from Bella Romero, Monk and Saylor Smith, who combined for seven hits.

Now, with the series win behind them, Como-Pickton looks ahead at their next matchup, a best-of-three Regional Quarterfinal against McLeod. The best-of-three series beings Thursday at 6 p.m. with Game Two to follow Friday at 6 p.m. and Game Three, if needed, to be played Saturday at 4 p.m.

Each game of the series will be played at Hooks High School.
