Souper Bowl of Caring Returns

Each year, 4-H groups across the state of Texas host the “Souper Bowl of Caring” event.  In 2022, over 500 pounds of food were collected during the campaign.  Even though that is a fantastic amount, we are hoping to top the pounds of food collected this year.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, 19% of Hopkins County children live in poverty.

All non-perishable food items donated will go to local hunger relief organizations.  All efforts will benefit local families who utilize local hunger relief agencies.  There are a few guidelines which must be followed:

  1. No out-of-date foods will be accepted.
  2. No dented, water-stained, or damaged packages or cans will be accepted.
  3. No canned items without manufacturer labels will be accepted.

Food or monetary donations will be accepted through February 13 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension office, 1200-B W. Houston, Sulphur Springs.  Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday.  Other agencies who would like to be added as a collection site may contact the Extension Office at 903-885-3443 and we’ll get the word out!  In 2022, Alliance Bank and Sulphur Springs News Telegram also served as food collection sites.

As the 2023 Football Super Bowl approaches, we encourage all who are able, to help us with the Souper Bowl of Caring!

Retirement Reception

Numerous individuals have asked about my upcoming retirement.  Thoughts of retirement have been circling my brain for over a year, and now, it is becoming a reality!  I have enjoyed my 27+ years with the Extension Service, but I’m ready to turn over the reins to someone else.  January 31 will be my official retirement date, but we’re having a party!  Put this date on your calendar:

  • When: Friday, January 27, 2023
  • Time: 2:00 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Where:  Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office, 1200-B W. Houston, Sulphur Springs

Please don’t bring gifts – I’d rather visit with you!  If you can’t make it, I’ll still be around, serving in various capacities in the community and church.

Closing Thought

Today be thankful and think how rich you are.  Your family is priceless, your time is gold and your health is wealth – Zig Ziglar
