Wildcats JV team will their way to another win

The Wildcats had a strong start last night against Liberty-Eylau with a  40 yard return by Ervine Iverson. A first down pass to Chris Adams for 17 yards and then Kaden Mitchell came right back to air for another first down pass this time to Iverson. On the next play Rose-Luke went for a 27 yard run but the touchdown was called back for a Wildcat holding penalty in the secondary. Mitchell picked up the first down on a bootleg run for 16 yards. Adams scored the first touchdown of the night on a quick swing pass from Mitchell. Torres’ extra point  was good putting the JV out front 7-0.

Liberty Eylau started their first drive from their own 35. The Wildcats held tight on first down but gave up long pass to score a 65 yard touchdown. The Leopards’ two point conversion attempt was good on the ground to take the lead 8-7.

The Wildcats started their second drive of the night on their own 34 yard line. Mitchell threw only his second interception of the year. The turnover gave the Leopards the ball at the Wildcats 31 yard line.  The young Wildcats defense held strong to force a turnover on downs on four quick downs, with negative five yards.

The offense went right to work on the ground with 14 yards from Mitchell and 7 yards from Rose-Luke, and another 12 yards by Mitchell. Not to be left out Jaylen Thompson picked up a hard five yards. Mitchell picked up another Cats’ first down with an nice eight yard run on a quarterback option. On the next play Rose-Luke took a short swing pass for 20 yards just coming up a yard short of the end zone. Mitchell finished out the drive with a short push behind the offensive line. Torres stayed perfect on the night. Wildcats regained the lead 14-8.

Unfortunately the Leopards had a 35 yard return on the kickoff starting the drive inside Wildcats’ territory. The defense gave up a long run on third down giving the Leopards a new set of downs inside the 10. LE punched the ball in on the ground to even the score. Their two point conversion attempt was incomplete.

On the ensuing kick off, the onside kick was confidently recovered by Levi Barnes. The Cats offense started off hot with swing pass to the right caught by Adams who took the ball 27 yards down to the LE 23 yard line. For the second time on the night the Leopard secondary picked off a Mitchell pass on the Leopards’ three yard line.

LE kept the ball for the first three plays to pick up 10 yards and a first down. On the next play Malachi Clayton picked off the pass.

The connection of Mitchell to Iverson picked up 18 yards on a quick slant route. Going back to the air on the next play where Drake White picked up nine tough yards. Thompson took a handoff up the middle for eight more yards and a Wildcats’ first down inside the Leopard 15. White caught another swing pass and picked up 10 yards setting up first and goal at the five yard line. The Wildcats pushed the ball over the goal line on a pass from Mitchell to Colten Privitt with four seconds left in the half. Torres’ extra point was good, 21-14 Wildcats’ lead going into half time.

LE’s first drive of the second half started at their own 44. The Wildcats defense forced a forth and short but was unable to stop the drive with LE picking up the first down on a quarterback sweep. On the next play LE’s running back broke through the middle for a big gain. Cats defense held for two downs but gave up a touchdown on third down with a sweep around the right end. The Leopards converted their second 2-point conversion of the night to go ahead 22-21

The Cats’ drive started with a Rose-Luke breaking several tackles to pick up a hard earned first down. A short gain on a quick pass to Adams on the next play from scrimmage. A penalty and a loss of downs force and Wildcat’s punt.  The Leopards went right back to work picking up 15 yards on the ground. The Cats’ defense tighten up on the next play and forced a LE punt.

Thompson picked up a needed 12 yards on first down to give the Young Wildcats’ offense some momentum going into the fourth quarter. The first two plays of the fourth was a repeat of final play of the third. Thompson powered his way to back to back double digit gains. Great catch by Adams on a high pass that picked up another Wildcats’ first down. Not to be left out Rose-Luke broke through the middle of the Leopards defense for 14 yards. Thompson carried the ball around the right side with a lead block by Gage Williams to take ball down to the five yard line of LE, setting up first and goal. Mitchell carried the ball down the one yard line. The Wildcats finally pushed the ball across the line on a quarterback keeper. Extra point by Torres was good, 28-22.

Leopards started the drive at their own 40. On second down the Leopards sprung a swing pass to the left for 25 yards. Another screen pass to the right picked up 10. On first down the Wildcats forced a loss of two. Pressure by Jakiron Thompson forced the LE quarterback to scramble and pass the ball for a loss of five. On the third down a questionable pass interference call gave the Leopards a first down with 44 seconds on the clock. Wildcats defense force a fumble recovered by Clayton.
