Just A Little Taste

Just A Little Taste

I was watching a group of singers on a religious channel the other day.  The look on their faces and the sheer joy they appeared to feel made me wonder what it would be like to feel like that all the time.  Sooner or later they have to wrap up the program and get back to the real world of fixing kid’s lunches and doing the laundry.  It dawned on me that maybe that was just a mini picture of what life might be like in Heaven.

Most of us human types spend a lot more time in the valley than on a mountaintop.  Sometimes at church when the music is awesome, the fellowship is sweet, and the sermon is uplifting, you wish you could bottle it up or grab hold of the moment and keep it forever.

I think maybe we get to catch a glimpse or have a momentary feeling of what it might be like to spend your existence in the presence of an Almighty power that could make us forget about any human needs but simply live in the moment of complete peace and joy.

Maybe our old life here is designed to have enough ruts and bumps to help us long for more of the mountaintop experience that may seem to elude our grasp.  Maybe those soul touching heart lifting face glowing times when we’re in the moment feeling like we’re in the very presence of our Maker are the hors d’oeurves of an expansive buffet of spiritual prime rib awaiting us.  Apostle Paul takes a lot of time to encourage us, telling us to keep on keeping on in the journey of life.  He says he has run the race and fought the good fight.

Life isn’t really set up for bystanders.  Some people choose to live a life secluded away from most of mankind where they can live a serene life without some three-year-old interrupting their thoughts with a demand for Fruit Loops or some juice.  Most of us have to spend our days needing an extra arm and a couple more legs to get it all done before we crash for the night, maybe in the middle of our prayers.

We’ve talked about how most of us older folks had to learn patience in our life’s journey as we toiled away at finally acquiring the house, farm, vehicle, business we desired.  We chide our youngins for wanting it all now in a couple hundred easy payments.  Maybe spiritually us older guys may have been a little guilty ourselves of wanting to get the whole spiritual experience now instead of running just a little bit longer toward the finish line.  Maybe those glimpses and buffet samples on the spiritual journey in this life are the motivation we need for the coming feast.
