The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles traveled to Grand Saline Friday, looking to pick up a series-deciding Game Two victory over Union Grove. The Lady Eagles won Game One of the series by a final score of 5-1 earlier in the week.

Union Grove was the road team Friday and took the opportunity to get on the board first. After the leadoff runner reached base on an error, Union Grove hit a two-run homer, forcing the Lady Eagles to play from behind right off the bat.

Como-Pickton immediately went to work trying to cut into the deficit, when leadoff hitter Bella Romero drew a walk to get the frame started. Romero would later come in to score on a sacrifice fly from Allyssa Corona, bringing the game back within one run.

After both teams were quiet in the second inning, Union Grove opened the third inning by reaching third base on an error. The following batter singled, once again giving Union Grove a two-run lead.

The offense slowed down for both teams for a big part of the game, as the Lady Eagles went into the bottom of the fifth still trailing 3-1. Mackensa Morris got the rally started, hitting a leadoff single on a grounder to center. Later in the inning Lauren Lewellen followed with a one-out double, before Mattison Buster was intentionally walked, loading the bases with just one out.

Addi Monk drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to right, cutting the deficit to 3-2, but making the second out of the inning. With runners on first and third, Corona once again came up huge for the Lady Eagles, this time hitting an inside-the-park home run, clearing the bases and giving Como-Pickton their first lead of the night at 5-3.

Neither team was able to plate another run in the sixth inning and the Lady Eagles went into the seventh, needing just three outs to advance to the Regional Semifinals.

Union Grove refused to go down easy, however, as the leadoff hitter drew a walk. Buster was able to get a ground out on the next batter, but the leadoff runner was able to advance to second.

With one out and a runner on second, Union Grove hit an RBI double, cutting the deficit to 5-4 and putting th potential tying run in scoring position. Buster followed with a pop up to second, before intentionally walking the next batter.

Needing just one more out, Buster was able to get a ground ball, though the runner reached on an error, loading the bases and putting the potential go-ahead run on second base. Buster was unfazed, however, as she answered back with a strikeout, stranding the bases loaded and walking away with the 5-4 win.

Buster went the full seven innings, allowing four runs, though only two of them were earned. She allowed just three hits and three walks, while striking out eight.

Corona led the way at the plate for the Lady Eagles, driving in four of their five runs. Monk had the only other RBI for Como-Pickton.

The win completes the two-game sweep for No. 6 ranked Como-Pickton and sends them to the Regional Semifinals where they will face No. 5 ranked Lovelady. The matchup, in which No. 5 will face No. 6, will be a three-game set starting Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Tyler Legacy High School.

Game Two of the series will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, with Game three, if needed, still to be determined. Coverage of the series will be provided on Front Porch News.
