Today and Everyday

[adning id=”33097″]

Today, like every other day of the year, requires an action from you.  Be you man, woman, or child, you need to wear daily sun protection over every inch of your body.  Do you?If you wear your hair parted, you need a bit of sunscreen over that exposed skin or else a sun-blocking hat.  If you have thinning hair, you need to apply sunscreen to the parts of your scalp where the hair does not provide full coverage be that temples, crown, hairline, or all over.  And don’t forget your ears!  And hands! We women may be assuming that our foundation’s SPF 25 has us covered.  The problem is that the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that for our face and neck we need to apply at least 1/4 tsp. of sunscreen. Other sources recommend more, up to a full teaspoon.  Any way you look at it, you would need to apply an estimated 6-8 times more foundation than you need to get SPF 25 coverage.  So, we are kidding ourselves if we think we only need a foundation.

Men:  You are probably thinking that the rugged Paul Newman or Clint Eastwood look is for you.  Or maybe George Hamilton is your healthy tan hero.  Have you seen a person after they have had a cancerous growth removed?  If you shave each day, then your skin is freshly exfoliated and even more at risk of sun damage.  You need sunscreen!Parents:  Did you know that a baby six months and under should be kept out of the sun?  Sunscreen isn’t even an option because a baby’s skin is so vulnerable to the sun’s rays.  Children older than six months need daily sun protection applied before they leave the house and should have it reapplied every two hours until they are home for the night. One and done is not a phrase that works for sun protection.  Reapplication after two hours of wear is a must.  If sweating or swimming, reapplication should occur more frequently. When selecting a sunscreen, be sure you look for:

  • SPF 30 or greater for your entire body.
  • Broad-spectrum so that it protects against UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays).
  •  In date.  If no date, assume sunscreen goes bad in about a year from purchase.
  •  If going in a water source such as a sea, pond, river, ocean, etc. that has an ecosystem, products free of ingredients that kill fish, coral, or other sea life.  Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are just two of the culprits.  Read the label and latest information available to see what is best.
  • Oil-free if you are prone to breakouts.

If you want a sun-kissed glow, try an over-the-counter sunless tanner or get a regular spray tan.  These types of products are so improved!  No more orange skin; no more weird smell; no more blotches if you use the right application method. To learn more about the whys and hows of sun protection, read my upcoming blog post SPF and What You Need to Know at kaylaprice.com or watch my upcoming video, Protecting Your Skin, by searching for Kayla Price At Home on YouTube.
