Last week the UIL released their new realignments for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons. With it, Sulphur Springs learned they will be joining District 8-4A, and they will be joined by Community, Anna, Kaufman, Mabank and Paris.

With a new head coach/athletic director, and a new district, there is plenty to be excited about for Sulphur Springs football fans. Monday, fans were given even more to look forward to, as Sulphur Springs released their full schedule for the 2022 season.

Scrimmages

The Wildcats will get things started with a pair of scrimmages to open the season. Their first scrimmage is a home game, Friday, Aug. 12 against Lindale.

For their final scrimmage before heading into the regular season, the Wildcats will travel to Will Point, Thursday, Aug. 18. Both scrimmages are set to begin at 7 p.m.

Jacksonville

The Wildcats open their season with a home game, Friday, Aug. 26 when they face the Jacksonville Maidens. The Wildcats will be looking to open their season with a win, against a Maidens team who won just one game last season.

Mount Pleasant

Friday, Sept. 2, Sulphur Springs will be hosting their second consecutive home game to open the year. Sulphur Springs will go up against a Mount Pleasant Tigers team who went 5-6 a year ago. Despite their 5-6 record, Mount Pleasant did go 4-3 in district play and earned a playoff berth.

Hallsville

The Wildcats will hit the road for the first time, Friday, Sept. 9 to face the Hallsville Bobcats. The Bobcats struggled a year ago, going 3-7, including losing to Jacksonville by a score of 49-20, which was Jacksonville’s one win of the season.

Val Alstyne

Sulphur Springs will hit the road once again, Friday, Sept. 23 to face Van Alystyne. Van Alystne is coming off a very strong season in which they went 8-4 last year and made it to the Area round of the playoffs. After being Iowa Park 23-16 in the first round, the Panthers lost 35-28 to Monahans in the Area round.

Liberty-Eylau

After back-to-back road matches, the Sulphur Springs Wildcats will return home, Friday, Sept. 23 to face Liberty-Eylau. The Leopards were 5-6 in 2021 and finished in fourth place of their district. Liberty-Eylau was shutout 28-0 by Van in the opening round of the playoffs.

Bye

After a busy preseason schedule, the Wildcats bye comes at the perfect time, giving them a week off to rest and regroup before beginning district play.

Community

The Wildcats will kickoff district play Friday, Oct. 7 with a home game against Community. Community will be looking to turn things around, after going more than 10 years since their last winning season. Community has gone 5-6 in each of their last three seasons, losing in the opening round of the playoffs each time, including a 15-0 loss to Glen Rose in 2021.

Mabank

For Sulphur Springs’ second district game, they will hit the road to face Mabank, Friday, Oct. 14. Mabank has had the same level of consistency that Community has, going 6-4 in each of their last three seasons, though they went just a combined 5-12 in district action over that time span.

Paris

Sulphur Springs will return home Friday, Oct. 21, to face the Paris. Paris is coming off a pair of strong seasons, going 9-5 in 2020 and 7-5 in 2021. Last year Paris went 3-3 in district play and beat Lincoln 49-29 in the opening round of the playoffs, before losing to Stephenville by a final score of 22-10.

Kaufman

Friday, Oct. 28, the Wildcats will hit the road for the final time, facing the Kaufman Lions. The two teams faced each other last year, with the Wildcats coming up just short by a final score of 34-32.

The Lions went on to go 8-4 in 2021, even shutting out Dallas Carter 24-0 in the opening round of the playoffs. They would be knocked out by La Vega in the following round, losing 14-10.

Anna

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats will have their regular season finale Friday, Nov. 4, at home against the Anna Coyotes. Anna is coming off a pretty strong year, in which they went 7-3 and went an undefeated 4-0 in non-district play.

In district action Anna went 3-3, beating Paris 18-7, but losing 35-14 to Kaufman. Despite their .500 record in district play, Anna tied for fifth place in their district, missing out on postseason action.

All regular season games are set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Further coverage of Sulphur Springs football will be provided on Front Porch News.
