The Sulphur Springs High School boy’s soccer team, hosted Texas High at home Saturday, Feb. 5 due to bad weather, late in the week.  The Varsity boys and the Junior Varsity boys had a good showing on the field.  Varsity took down Texas High in a 6-0 win, and the JV lost 1-0.  The JV loss was a hard one to take, since the boys played well and both keepers did a great job making saves to keep the score low.

The first goal for Varsity came with a free, direct kick goal from Alex Yanez. A direct kick is a kick due to a foul during the game and can be kicked directly into the goal without the need of another player touching the ball before the goal is made.  The other free kick option is an indirect kick where another player must touch the ball before it can be considered a goal if it makes it to the back of the net.

Play continued with the Wildcats fighting and maintaining control of the field and possession of the ball. Good communication from players and movement made the second goal from Sulphur Springs look like money. A pass across the field from Jose Rodriguez, for the assist, to Osvaldo Arellano who carried the ball around players and made a shot that connected to the back of the net.

Texas High had a few drives towards the goal but nothing that would be answered with a ball in the back of the net. The Wildcat defense shut down the forward momentum from Texas High, with a couple of saves from the keeper. The third Sulphur Springs goal came from a corner kick, kicked by Yanez to the backside and kicked in by Aubrey Camacho. The half ended with Sulphur Springs up 3-0.

The boys were fired up and started the second half strong with an early goal from Rodriguez and the assist from Yanez. The boys worked together to move the ball and shoot it to the goal, getting by the Texas High keeper for a 4-0 lead.

The Texas High defense was wound up by this point and continued to make mistakes that would cost them another goal by Yanez off the back side of the goal box.  The ball was sent over by Edgar Ramirez, 5-0 Wildcats.

Alan Hernandez scored the last goal for the Wildcats with an assist by Angel Andino.  The Varsity team played a great game against Texas High.  They showed their capabilities to move the ball and shoot to take advantage of those scoring opportunities.    Coach Upton had this to say about their performance on Saturday, “Varsity had a very impressive win at home, we love Gerald Prim. We got an early free kick goal in the first 5 minutes and never looked back. A lot of players got in on the fun! JV lost a close one they should have won!  Next few games are very crucial, for the 3 and 4 spots in district.” Be sure to come out and watch your Wildcat and Lady Cat soccer teams play.  The next boys game is away at Marshal on Tuesday, February 8th.

This win brings the Wildcat season standings to Record: 2-11-2 (W-L-T).  These boys have so much potential to do amazing things this season.
