The Sulphur Springs Wildcats hit the road Friday to face Grace Prep Academy in Arlington. This would be one final match for the Wildcats before they begin district play Tuesday against Marshall.

The game opened with a back-and-forth opening quarter in which neither team was able to create much separation from the other. With less than a minute to play in the first quarter, Parker Whisenhunt picked off a pass, turning it in to a two-hand slam on the other, pushing their lead to 13-9.

Branson Lynn scored the first Sulphur Springs points of the second frame, knocking down a 3-pointer with the help of an assist from Kordrick Turner. Turner found Lynn later in the frame for another 3-pointer to even things up at 19-19.

Things stayed close well into the third quarter, when Whisenhunt scored on a fast break that gave the Wildcats a 34-33 lead. Early in the fourth quarter senior Caleb Alexander kept Grace Prep from running away with a corner 3-pointer that put them back within one point.

With 4:18 left to play Alexander knocked down another deep 3-pointer, this time to tie things up at 50-50. With less than a minute to go, and with his team trailing by four points, Turner came up with a huge steal which he turned into a layup to make the score 56-54.

Despite their best efforts, the Wildcats were unable to stay in the game, ultimately falling by a final score of 61-57. Turner and Alexander were the leading scorers for the Wildcats, finishing with 16 points each.

Turner had a very efficient game, shooting 8-10, while also grabbing five rebonds and dishing out four assists.  Alexander shot 6-10 from the field, making four of his eight 3-point attempts.

Lynn and Whisenhunt were next, scoring nine points and eight points respectively. Cason Arrington added four points, while Justin Haire and Malachi Myles each had two points.  Haire also had a great day on the glass, grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds.

The loss drops the Wildcats record to 14-5 on the year. They will be back in action Tuesday, with their district opener at home against Marshall.

Sulphur Springs will be having a toy drive for Tuesday’s game. If you bring an unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more you can get into the game for free. The freshman team begins at 1 p.m. with the junior varsity following at 2:15 and the varsity set to go last at 3:30.
