The Saltillo Lions junior high team traveled to Sulphur Bluff Monday, looking to get back to the .500 mark in the early go of the season. After winning just one of their first three games, the Lions were hungry to pick up their second win.
Saltillo set the tone early, playing strong defense to keep Sulphur Bluff off the scoreboard. The Lions allowed just two points in the frame, while scoring eight of their own to get out to a quick lead.
Both teams were able to find more offense in the second quarter, combining for 20 points between the two. Saltillo once again outscored Sulphur Bluff, this time 12-8 to push their lead to 20-10.
The third quarter was by far their best of the night, both having their highest scoring quarter, while also holding Sulphur Bluff to their lowest scoring quarter of the night. The Lions posted 18 points in the frame while only allowing one, setting themselves up for an easy finish.

The Lions offense did slow down some in the final frame, although their defense never lost a step. Allowing just four points in the final quarter, Saltillo went on to win the game by a final score of 47-17.
“We started off really slow,” coach Bret Myers said. “But we picked up the pace and started hustling in the second half. A great way to finish the game.”
Lucas Woman was the leading scorer for the Lions, finishing the game with a solid 11-point outing. Just behind him, also in double-digits, was Dakota Womack with 10 points. Mason Stillwagoner was behind them with five points of his own.
The win improves the Lions record to 2-2 to start the year. Their next game is set for Monday at home against Miller Grove.
