Hopkins County Reads Program Being Offered at Sulphur Springs Public Library

HOPKINS COUNTY READS: You may have seen this logo around town, on a flyer or at the public library.  The Sulphur Springs Public Library sponsors the yearlong community wide event for teens and adults, and includes author visits and discussions about the historical nature of the books.

This year our theme is “Inspired by the Past; Journeying towards the Future”. The January program features The Promise by Ann Weisgarber and takes place on Galveston Island at the time of the Great Galveston Hurricane.  The 1900 Galveston Hurricane remains the deadliest disaster in U.S. History.

Author Ann Weisgarber will be here in Sulphur Springs to discuss the history surrounding Galveston Island during the 1900 hurricane and sign copies of her book, available for sale at the library on Thursday January 30, 6pm at Sulphur Springs Public Library.

The February program features the book The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown and our speaker is local PJC History professor, Ken Hanushek, discussing the book and other inspirational moments of Olympic Games history. Thursday February 27 at 6pm at Sulphur Springs Public Library.

What is a Community Wide Read? Just as our new downtown plaza connects people to each other,encouraging citizens to read the same book through Hopkins County Reads can connect our community by fostering an appreciation of books and promoting literacy.

Communities of all shapes and sizes have adopted the concept originated by the Washington Center for the Book: communities all over the United States have increasingly embraced the notion of civic unity through the reading of literature. There are currently statewide, citywide, countywide, and country-wide reading programs all over the world.
