Mark 10:24
“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.”
One of the biggest disconnects that occurs in Christian discipleship is the lack of understanding of the difference between being disciples and being taught. The modern Western education model is far from what the Bible describes in today’s text when it refers to a teacher and their student(s). In today’s classroom setting the goal is to gain the teachers knowledge of a subject. In Jesus’ culture, the goal was to become who the teacher was. There is a marked difference in the teacher student/model and the rabbi/talmid model that Jesus is referring to. When a parent sends their child to school, they’re not looking for that teacher to turn their child into that teacher. They simply want that child to be taught the required curriculum. This has caused today’s Christians to have an extremely watered down view of discipleship. When you become a believer, your purpose in life is to become who Jesus is. As a part of the Body of Christ, when people look at you they should be looking at Jesus. Obviously, perfection in this area is not easy but you can, through spending time with Him, become more like Him. Just as Jesus’ disciples’ lives became models of Jesus Himself, your life’s purpose should to be as Christ-like as possible. Jesus never missed an opportunity to show the love of God to those He crossed paths with. That is where your journey should start.
