Firework Safety Tips

Firework Safety Tips
  • PublishedJune 30, 2024

As Independence Day celebrations continue this weekend and next, it is a great time to remind you of the best practices when handling fireworks. These products promise a spectacular show and light up the sky with all kinds of colors and sparkles, but as pleasant as these are to watch, they can also be particularly dangerous if not handled carefully.

Save this information and share it with a friend or family member who could use some tips on keeping the party fun but most importantly – SAFE.

Local community member, Todd McCoy shares a list of the most common and helpful Firework Safety Tips:

  • Children should not use fireworks. Make sure an adult is always watching.
  • Remember: Alcohol and fireworks are a bad mix.
  • Follow the instructions on the firework.
  • Avoid shooting fireworks near dry grass, brush, or other materials that can easily catch on fire.
  • Have a bucket of water, garden hose, or other water source ready for emergencies.
  • Make sure consumer fireworks are legal in your area, before buying or using them.
  • Never use or make professional-grade fireworks.
  • Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This is hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person or occupied area.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move away from them quickly.
  • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device to prevent a trash fire.
