  • PublishedOctober 12, 2023

Tuesday night was a big night for the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats, as they played host to Liberty-Eylau. The game was not only a chance to improve to 4-2 in district play and keep a firm grasp of a playoff spot, but they also honored seniors Kate Monk and Mary Taylor.

Looking to make a memorable night for their seniors, the Lady Cats got off to an amazing start, dominating the opening set by a score of 25-12. They kept the momentum going into the second set, once again winning by a commanding score of 25-18.

The third and final set was the toughest of the night, though they were ultimately able to put the game away. They needed extra time to do so, but the Lady Cats came out on top 28-26, winning the game in straight sets.

The straight-set victory was their third such in district play. Their other win, at home against Paris, was won in four sets.

The pair of seniors had strong showings in their senior night victory, combining for nine kills between the two of them. Taylor also had a pair of aces and a pair of blocks, while Monk would lead the team with three blocks, on top of having a pair of assists and one ace.

Junior Trinity Jefferson once again had another great game, leading the team with 10 kills. She also had the second-most assists on the team with 12.

Other notables including sophomore Rainey Johnson, who had eight kills, three blocks, three digs and two aces. Junior Aaliyah Cheatum also had four kills, while freshman Harper Hodges had team-high’s in assists (14) and aces (3).

The win improves the Lady Cats to 4-2 in district play with just four games remaining on their schedule. Sitting in sole possession of third place, Sulphur Springs has a two-game lead on fourth place Paris, a three-game lead on fifth place Pittsburg and a four-game lead on Liberty-Eylau.

The Lady Cats trail second place North Lamar by just one game, while Pleasant Grove sits at the top of the district with an undefeated district record.

Next up for Sulphur Springs is North Lamar at home Friday at 4:30 p.m. After that they will finish their regular season on a three-game road trip, going to Paris, Pittsburg and Pleasant Grove.
