Wildcats Look To Extend Winning Streak On Homecoming Night

Wildcats Look To Extend Winning Streak On Homecoming Night
  • PublishedOctober 11, 2023

Another week of Texas High School Football is here, and your Sulphur Springs Wildcats continue to be one of the hottest teams in the state. Last week, on the road in their district opener, the Wildcats extended their winning streak to four games, beating Community by a final score of 36-7.

This week, the Wildcats will get the chance to play in front of their home crowd for the first time in a month, and they will be looking to send their Homecoming crowd home happy with yet another win.

The 5-1 Wildcats will be hosting the 1-5 Panthers of Mabank, a team who lost in a 35-0 shutout to Anna in their district opener last week. The two teams enter the game with opposite records, though they played each other fairly closely in last season’s matchup.

Last season it was Sulphur Springs who walked away with the road victory, though the game remained close throughout. After leading 21-17 at the half, the Wildcats added a second-half score, winning the game 28-17 and improving to 6-1 on the season, the same record they will be hoping to improve to this week.

In last year’s game, it was quarterback Brady Driver who paved the way. He was a perfect 14-14 throwing, accumulating 176 passing yards and one passing touchdown. He also had 63 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns, accounting for all four scores in the game.

Returning receivers Skylar Lewis and Jaxson Haire also came up big in the game, combining for seven of the 14 catches, 76 receiving yards and Lewis had the one receiving touchdown of the night.

The trio of Driver, Lewis and Haire come into this weeks game with a ton of momentum, each playing pivotal roles in last week’s district opening win. Driver threw for 247 passing yards and four touchdowns, with Lewis and Haire combining for 192 yards and all four scores.

It was also another huge week for running back Cameron Jefferson, who had his second consecutive game with 100 or more rushing yards. Jefferson was given 15 carries and picked up 115 yards and one touchdown, this coming just one week after he ran for 158 yards and a touchdown against Liberty-Eylau.

The Wildcats defense had yet another strong showing as well, holding Community to just seven points. So far this season Sulphur Springs has allowed 30 or more points just twice, and have also held opponents to under 20 points as many times.

In their current four-game winning streak the Wildcats have been dominant, outscoring their opponents 154-90, winning by an average score of 39-23. A win against Mabank would improve them to 6-1 and keep them at the top of the district at 2-0.

Homecoming festivities are set to begin at 6:55 p.m. with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. Anybody who can’t make it to the game can tune in to our live broadcast on Front Porch News and Chad’s Media beginning at 6:45 p.m.
