Texas Football Magazine Picks Wildcats To Finish 2nd In District
  • PublishedJune 27, 2023

The summer months can be a slow time for sports fans, especially High School sports fans. With no sports for another couple months, fans look for milestones, something to help them get to the cool nights of fall and Friday Night Lights.

One of those yearly milestones is the release of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine, where fans can read about the upcoming season, and see where their team is predicted to finish. This year is an especially exciting year for fans of the Sulphur Springs Wildcats, who have higher expectations than they’ve had in quite some time.

In this years edition of the annual magazine, the experts are very high on the Wildcats, predicting them to finish second place in District 8-4A. After a great season in which Sulphur Springs went 7-3 in the regular season and broke their playoff drought, they are picked to finish behind only Anna this season, a team who finished as Regional Finalists a year ago.

Sulphur Springs returns a ton of talent on both sides of the ball, including quarterback Brady Driver, who threw for 1,337 yards and had a total of 26 touchdowns in his junior season. Returning along with Driver is last seasons leading rusher Malachi Roland, as well as a pair of receivers in Skylar Lewis and Jaxon Haire who combined for 10 touchdowns in their sophomore and freshman seasons.

The Wildcats also have a number of players returning on the defensive side of the ball, including safety Ty Bybee and defensive end Nathan Andrews, who each excelled in their sophomore seasons last year. Bybee and Andrews will be considered leaders in a defense who has a chance to be as strong as the offense.

The pair of incoming juniors will be joined by returning linebackers Bo Loggins and Larren Vaughn, giving them returning players on each level of the defense, along with a mix of players who will be getting the opportunity to play bigger roles this year.

After a great first season under Coach Brandon Faircloth, Sulphur Springs has kept the momentum going. Just last week the Wildcats competed in the State 7-On-7 tournament, having a strong showing and going 2-2.

Each of their losses came down to the final second, and the Wildcats very well could’ve found themselves as winners if they had more time on the clock. Now with a wining season under their belt, a playoff appearence and a full year in Coach Faircloth’s system, the Wildcats look to take the next step and make a postseason run.

Over the next few weeks we will be breaking down Sulphur Springs’ schedule, doing a preview for each game and what to possibly expect from their opponents. Stay tuned to Front Porch News for all things Sulphur Springs Wildcats football.
