Lady Cats set for Area Round Against Mabank

Lady Cats set for Area Round Against Mabank
  • PublishedMay 2, 2023

The No. 3 ranked Sulphur Springs Lady Cats are once again headed to the Area round of the playoffs, making this their sixth consecutive season of making it to at least the second round of the playoffs. The Lady Cats made quick work of the Lindale Lady Eagles, sweeping them in their best-of-three series.

In the opening game of the series ace Crimson Bryant set the tone, having yet another spectacular outing. Bryant allowed no runs and no hits, finishing just a walk shy of a perfect game.

The offense had a strong showing as well, winning the game by a final score of 10-0. The Lady Cats added four runs late to give them a 10-run lead, while getting production from every part of their lineup.

Friday’s Game Two was a bit different, though the Lady Cats were still in full control. The No. 3 ranked Cats had just a 2-0 lead when the game was delayed due to lightning in the sixth inning.

The two teams had to come back Saturday morning to finish the game, which seemed to breath new life into Sulphur Springs. They would go on to add another five runs to their tally, putting the game and the series away by a final score of 7-0.

Now in the second round, the Lady Cats will be going against a familiar foe in the Mabank Lady Panthers. The two teams have faced each other once already this season, when Sulphur Springs won a tight 1-0 battle back on March 7.

In that one, Bryant was once again spectacular, throwing a complete game shutout. She also drove in the only run of the night, hitting a one-out triple that scored Reese Ragan.

Ragan was also great, scoring the only run and having the only multi-hit game for Sulphur Springs. Emerson Thompson, Bayler Boatman, Graci Adair and Abbey Goldsmith each had one hit as well.

After that loss, Mabank went on an incredible run, winning their next 11 games. Over those 11 games they outscored their opponents 106-11.

Much like the Bi-District round, the Area round will also be a best-of-three series. Game One of the set is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. with Sulphur Springs being the home team.

The two teams will turn around and face-off Saturday at 3 p.m. for Game Two, with Mabank being the home team. Game Three, if needed, is scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. and the two teams will flip a coin to see who is the home team.

All three games in the series will be held at Rains High School, where both Sulphur Springs and Mabank have already played at once in this postseason. The entire series will be broadcast live on Front Porch News and Chad’s Media.
