Obituary for Cheryl Simenstad
  • PublishedApril 14, 2023

Cheryl Lee Simenstad, 76, a retired nurse and a loved and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away in Sulphur Springs, Texas, on March 27, 2023, from complications after a bad fall.

Cheryl lived life like it wasn’t a dress rehearsal – she piloted small planes in the Alaskan bush, rode motorcycles, and loved to fish. She enjoyed travel and spending time with friends and a large extended family, made a mean lasagna, and could be relied upon to burn the garlic bread. The eldest of two children, Cheryl Lee McCay was born in 1946 in San Diego, California, the daughter of George Ellis and Iris Jean McCay. In 1966, she married Thomas Lloyd and gave birth to daughter Iris and son Thomas. In 1978, she married James Michael Luton and they shared life until his passing in 1999. In 2002, she married Paul Dean Simenstad, who survives her.

She is also survived by daughter Iris Korzon (husband Kent) of Alaska and grandchildren Erik, Mark, and Keryl Lee; step-daughter Laura Williams (husband Roy) of Alaska and step-grandchildren Joshua, Amanda, Megan, and Remington; step-daughter Lisa Shonrock of Kansas and step-grandson Carl; step-son Mike Luton of Alaska and step-grandchildren Natasha and Robert; step-daughter Kathy Holm of Iowa and step-grandchildren Stephanie, Haley, and Keith; step-daughter Joann Luton of Iowa and step-grandson James; a multitude of step-great-grandchildren; and best friend Gena Reese of Texas.

Cheryl was pre-deceased by her brother George Edward McCay, son Thomas Lloyd, step-grandson Jed Luton, and step-granddaughter Marta Shonrock.

Arrangements are under the direction of Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
