Como-Pickton Lady Eagles stay undefeated in district play

Como-Pickton Lady Eagles stay undefeated in district play

The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles have been red hot as of late, and Friday they were looking to keep that streak going. After beating Alba-Golden earlier in the week, Como-Pickton was looking to stay undefeated in district play.

The Lady Eagles’ district home opener was especially big, considering they were going up against Cumby, another team who won their district opener. With Como-Pickton, Cumby and Cooper as the only 1-0 teams in the district, whoever walked away with a win in this one would be putting themselves in great position.

The game opened with a very close opening frame, something the Lady Eagles have grown accustomed to. It was the second quarter when Como-Pickton was able to create some separation between them and the Lady Trojans, outscoring Cumby 14-4 in the frame, taking a 21-15 lead at the end of the first half.

The game was far from over, however, as the Cumby Lady Trojans never backed down. Cumby was able to cut into the deficit, cutting the Lady Eagles’ lead to just four points going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was the closest frame of the night, with both teams fighting hard to remain undefeated in district play. With neither team willing to back down, they found themselves in a tied game with just 10 seconds left to play.

With just 10 seconds left, Como-Pickton fed the ball to junior Addi Monk in the paint. Monk was having an incredible outing already, and put in the game-winning bucket, giving Como-Pickton the 37-35 win.

It wasn’t just the game-winning bucket that Monk provided for Como-Pickton, as she led the way with 24 points. After putting up 18 points in the district opener, the junior is now averaging 21 points per game in district play.

Mattison Buster, Sanay Diaz and Cali Morris were the other scorers for Como-Pickton, combining for the other 13 points. The win bumps Como-Pickton to 12-4 overall and keeps them undefeated at 2-0 in district play.

“The Lady Eagles hosted Cumby on their district home opener and it was an intense game,” Coach Joe Garcia said. “Your Lady Eagles battled back-and-forth, exchanging leads all game long.”

“On a tied game with 10 seconds left, Addi Monk scored on a post up move to put the Lady Eagles up by two to capture an important victory. Your Lady Eagles move to 2-0 in District. Great job Ladies!!”

Como-Pickton is back in action this week, when they travel to Miller Grove Monday. The game is varsity only and will begin at 5 p.m.
