The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles traveled to Alba-Golden Tuesday, looking to open up district play with a win. The Lady Eagles also had a ton of momentum, coming off a 4-1 run in which they finished as runner-up’s in Sulphur Bluff’s Cap Herman Tournament.

Alba-Golden is a team that Como-Pickton is quite familiar with, sharing a district with them over the years. The Lady Eagles had Alba-Golden’s number last season, sweeping them in both matches by final scores of 51-30 and 54-24.

Despite their success against them last season, Como-Pickton opened the game cold offensively, scoring just four points in the opening frame. They were able to pick things up in the second quarter, however, holding Alba-Golden to just four points and trying things up at 14-14.

The second half was much more high scoring, with both teams able to get a rhythm going offensively. The two teams continued to stay neck-and-neck in the third quarter, with Alba-Golden taking a slight 27-24 lead into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter Como-Pickton was able to find the momentum they had last week, completely dominating the final frame. The Lady Eagles’ were almost able to match their point total for the entire game, scoring 23 points in the final quarter.

Their success wasn’t just on offense, however, as they were also able to Alba-Golden to just nine points in the quarter. The 23-9 run proved to be huge for Como-Pickton, leading them to a 47-36 victory.

Senior Lauren Lewellen paced the way for the Lady Eagles, scoring a game-high 20 points. Junior Addi Monk was right behind her, adding 18 points, after averaging 23 points per game during the Cap Herman Tournament and being named to the All-Tournament Team.

Junior point guard Cali Morris had a strong showing as well, providing the Lady Eagles with eight points. Sophomore guard Maggie Brown was the only other player for Como-Pickton to score, adding one point to help the Lady Eagles in their 11-point victory.

The win pushes Como-Pickton’s record to an impressive 11-4 on the season and perhaps more importantly starts their district record at 1-0. The win also proved to be massive, as Como-Pickton was picked to finish fourth in District 15-2A by TABC. Alba-Golden was picked to finish one spot above them, and the win against them could prove to be massive in the final standings.

The two other teams picked to finish at the top of District 15-2A by TABC were Cooper and Quinlan Boles. The two teams faced each other in the district opener, where Cooper was able to get the upper hand in a thrilling 81-71 win.

Como-Pickton and Cooper are joined by Cumby, as the only 1-0 teams in their district. The Lady Eagles will multiple chances to help their chances out in district play, with games against Cumby, Cooper and Boles coming up on their schedule.

The varsity wasn’t the only Lady Eagle’s squad that had success Tuesday night, as they junior varsity also faced Alba-Golden. After a low scoring 5-3 opening quarter, the Lady Eagles were able to dominate the next two frames, taking a 22-6 lead into the final quarter.

While Alba-Golden got the best of Como-Pickton in the final frame, it wasn’t near enough to get themselves back into the game and the Lady Eagles won by a final score of 29-12.

Shyann Wetzel played a huge role in the win, outscoring Alba-Golden by herself with a huge 14-point performance. Sadie Wetzel was the next leading scorer, reaching half of her opponents point total with six points.

Other scorers included Valeria Gonzales with four points, Saylor Smith with three points and Sarah Corely with two points.

Como-Pickton will be looking to keep their hot streak and their undefeated district record going, when they host the Cumby Lady Trojans Friday. Stay tuned to Front Porch News for updates of the game, and continued updates on the Como-Pickton Lady Eagles season.
