Lady Eagles take 2nd place in Cap Herman Tournament

The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles had a great weekend, finishing second place in the Cap Herman Tournament in Sulphur Bluff. Playing in five different games, the Lady Eagles went 4-1, improving their record on the season to 10-4.
Game 1 vs Sulphur Bluff
The opening game for Como-Pickton was against the host school themselves, Sulphur Bluff. The game didn’t open in the Lady Eagles favor, but it was the second quarter when they were able to swing things in their direction.
After entering the second quarter trailing 10-9, Como-Pickton was able to take a 28-13 lead at the end of the first half. They continued to dominate in the second half, walking away with a big 52-27 win in their opening game of the tournament.
The Lady Eagles were led by Addi Monk who had a huge 23-point performance. While no other Lady Eagle scored in double-digits, Cali Morris had nine points while Lauren Lewellen and Mattison Buster each had eight points.
Game 2 vs Ector
Como-Pickton’s momentum carried over to their second game, in which they got out to an amazing start, leading 25-6 at the end of the opening frame. The second quarter was just as strong, adding another 20 points and allowing just six points again, pushing their lead to 45-12 by the end of the first half.
The Lady Eagles came out just as strong in the second half, outscoring Ector 19-3 in the third quarter. Though Ector got the best of Como-Pickton in the finale frame, it was too-little-too-late, as the Lady Eagles won by a final score of 75-34.
It was once again Monk who paced the Lady Eagles offense, this time having an even more impressive 31-point outing. Buster also finished in double-digits, finishing with 12 points.
Maggie Brown was just outside of double-digits with nine points, while Morris kept a steady average with eight points.
Game 3 vs Whitewright
After back-to-back blowout wins, the Como-Pickton had by far their toughest game of the tournament so far. The two teams opened with a very close opening frame, in which Whitewright was able to take a 12-10 lead.
The Lady Eagles continued to fight hard with a tough second quarter. Things stayed close but the Lady Eagles were able to outscore them 14-10, taking a 24-22 lead at the end of the first half.
The second half was much lower scoring, though things stayed close the entire way. With things all tied up at the end of the third quarter, Como-Pickton was able to finish the game strong, walking away with a 33-29 win.
Monk and Buster once again paced the way, combining for 17 of the teams 33 points. Monk had nine points while Buster had eight points, helping keep Como-Pickton undefeated in the tournament.
Game 4 vs Saltillo JV
With their toughest match of the tournament behind them, the Lady Eagles went right back to dominating in their fourth game, as they went up against Saltillo’s junior varsity squad. The Lady Eagles ran out to a 14-6 lead in the first quarter, never looking back.
While things were much closer the rest of the way, Como-Pickton never let their lead waver, winning the game by a final score of 62-29.
Monk once again led the way, this time with her best outing of the tournament, outscoring her opponents by herself with 39 points. Buster was the only other player to finish in double-digits with 10 points.
Championship game vs Saltillo
With a perfect 4-0 record, the Lady Eagles went into the championship game, going up against their toughest match yet, the No. 7 ranked Saltillo Lady Lions.
The game was very similar to their match against Whitewright, this time with Saltillo leading by two at the end of the first frame. Como-Pickton answered back by outscoring the Lady Lions by four in the second quarter, taking an 18-16 lead at the end of the first half.
Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles, Saltillo answered back by controlling the entire second half. The Lady Lions went on to outscore Como-Pickton 26-15 in route to a 42-33 win.
Monk was the only Lady Eagle to finish in double-digits, this time with 15 points. Buster and Lewellen were next with seven points and six points respectively.
Despite not being able to walk away with the championship, it was still a great weekend for Como-Pickton, going 4-1 and improving their record to 10-4. Monk had a strong weekend, averaging over 23 points per game.
Buster was the next leading scorer, averaging just shy of double-digits for the tournament. Both Monk and Buster were named to the All-Tournament Team.
