Free Things to Do in Crested Butte

Looking for a new place to travel on a budget?

During your trip, it’s normal to look for ways to discover more parts of Crested Butte without dipping into your ski budget. How about some opportunities to have fun without spending a dime? Here are some activities that are perfect for just that.

Kebler Pass offers the panoramic views of golden aspen during fall and serves as a venue for a variety of snow sports such as skiing and cross country snow mobile trips during winters. As well as a scenic drive with friends, family, or just your best riding companion! As one of the most popular things to do in Crested Butte, the no added expense is just a bonus!

If you’re really feeling that drive go and check out Schofield Pass as well!  A scenic mountain pass through the Sawatch Mountain Range and connects Crested Butte with the nearby town of Marble! Keep in mind, although this is free and well worth the views, the road is narrow with steep passages. If you’re up for the challenge and can do so safely, you’re in for a real treat.

If you’re not in the mood to drive we recommend to get out and stretch those legs on Trail 403!  Starting near the end of Mountain Gulch Road, Trail 403 is a mountain bike path that is suitable for intermediate riders. The site, primarily used for biking can also be hiked! It features a variety of wildflowers for bikers and hikers to take in. Note, this will best suited for experienced hikers as some areas are steep. The views are breathtaking and priceless!

History Buffs check out the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum! Built inside the oldest standing building in the area, Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum has an eclectic collection of artifacts categorized as the exhibits of the history of coal mining and skiing as well as a model railroad and town, and a Mountain Bike Hall of Fame!

Need a way to relax after all your adventures? Montanya Distillers is the way to go. A local distillery specializing in varieties of rum which are available for complementary tastings. The bar also offers rum cocktails and occasionally hosts live music performances.

Planning a worthwhile vacation doesn’t always require spending an arm and a leg. With stunning views and full day actives that don’t cost a penny, Crested Butte has plenty of excitement to offer that you’ll remember forever!
