Sulphur Springs Boys Powerlifting finishes 2nd at Regionals

The Sulphur Springs boys powerlifting team traveled to Whitehouse Thursday for their Regional meet. After a very strong season, the Wildcats were looking for another strong showing with a chance for individuals to advance to State.

As a team Sulphur Springs had a very strong showing, finishing in second place in a field of 32 teams. The Wildcats also had four individuals who qualified for State.

Senior Juan Hernandez, who finished in first place in the 132-pound weight class. Matthew Mitchell was the lone junior to qualify, after finishing second in the 181-pound weight class. 

Another pair of seniors also qualified for state, Chad Maynard and Ben Hatcher. Maynard finished third in the 220-point weight class, while Hatcher took fifth place in the 198-pound weight class. 

The State competition will take place March 25-26 in Abilene. Continued coverage of the Wildcats powerlifting team will be provided on Front Porch News.
