The Miller Grove Hornets baseball team got their season underway Thursday with a pair of games in the Sulphur Bluff tournament. After making it all the way to the Regional finals last season, the Hornets were looking to pick up exactly where they left off a year ago.

Miller Grove’s first game was against the host school, Sulphur Bluff. The Hornets were the road team and wasted no time finding their offense, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first.

Despite taking an early 2-0 lead, Miller Grove found themselves playing from behind, after allowing a three-run inning in the bottom of the frame.

The Hornets answered right back in the top of the second, loading the bases with just one out. Jacob George drew a walk, bringing in the tying run, before Lexton Sly drove in a pair of runs to take a 5-3 lead.

Working with a two-run lead, Tanner Hensley had a strong bottom of the second, before he was relieved by Landon Burnett. Burnett recorded the final four outs for Miller Grove, picking up the four-out save.

The Hornets turned around and immediately faced Union Hill, as the second part of the double header. Miller Grove kept their strong play going and even turned things up a notch, winning the game by a final score of 7-0.

The pair of wins make Miller Grove 2-0 to open the season. The Hornets are back in action with a pair of games Friday against Avery and Harts Bluff. Continued coverage of how they do in the Sulphur Bluff tournament will be published on Front Porch News.
