Fire investigators have ruled that a January 20 fire on Moore Street, which killed two children, was not intentional in cause.

Sulphur Springs Assistant Fire Marshall Aaron Kager reported that after a review by outside entities, the fire in the early morning hours of January 20 was both undetermined of origin but not caused intentionally.

“The fire appears to be unintentional, although the exact cause is undetermined,” Kager told Front Porch News.

Fire experts have now determined the fire started in the room of one-year-old Hayden Lee and three-year-old Heaven Lee. The girls, who were in the living room at the time the fire started, later died during the course of the fire, Kager said.

Authorities first speculated that an extension cord was the cause of the blaze, but are unable to rule that out, Kager said.

“As far as rumors, we can’t speak on those, but what was discovered at the scene, there was nothing [suspicious] on that end,” Kager noted.

Kager noted that investigative teams do not anticipate criminal charges will stem from the incident.

Certified fire investigators from Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as well as an independent fire investigator and Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office criminal investigation assisted on the investigation and “did not have any red flags.”

“We have a scientific method we use,” Kager said. “We have all our bases covered and we are extremely thorough.”
